Jimmy Scott, in memoriam.

I cannot remember how I fell on the beautiful version of Jealous Guy by Little Jimmy Scott. But it was quite a meeting... One of the few pieces of music that touched me completely, that got cought in some marvelous moments in my life, as if it "augmented" them, and now keeps on touching me for its mere charm and its perfect performance. The sound of the piano, so full, sweet, welcoming and wandering, that takes you by the hand and leads you into this world of love, apologies and acknowledgement of one's weakness. And, of course, the voice. That old kid's voice. This is it. A voice that never changed since childhood, accompanying this great interpreter during all his life and turned him into one of the most fascinating alien in the male jazz singing world.

I saw him in Paris. It was great moment to see and listen to this man, so small, so lean, so old, seating here in its tall stool and from which was coming off this voice, half broken because of time and life, half intact because it never changed to a man's voice, and, most of all, so lively, sometimes sweet, sometimes strong and always lead by the expression of many emotions, with much naturalness. Then, I discovered other periods of his life, like when he sang: "The Bluest Blues" with an orchestra, where you can listen to a kind of clown playing a man in love and doubting so much of her feelings... His version of "Angel Eyes" is also very touching, delicate.

He is a different musician for me.

I wonder how the meeting with Paco de Lucía up here will sound...

Music, emotions and beauty / Música, emoción y belleza

Most of the time, we listen to music because we want it to accompany our feelings, day after day. We could need rhythm, joy, positiveness in the morning, to wake up and begin the labour day with energy. We could need something cooler and still cheery at lunch. At dinner, something even cooler. And in the night, when we no longer have to bear the rhythm and stress of the day, music could be chosen to accompany any feeling : joy, pain, sadness, saudade, need for stillness (Chet's Let's Get Lost soundtrack for instance...), need for powerful orchestras to let our souls jump and explode into the sky (Beethoven's 7th symphony, Mahler 3rd Symphony...). We like to have music at home when we do the cleaning, when we receive friends, or when we drive in the car, to dream our dreams along with it...
Still, music is not only this. These are merely "usages" of the music, submission of music to our emotional needs during our days. But if we let music connect with something deeper, independent from these emotions and external rhythm, then we enter music, and enter another kind of emotional fascination. You can just sit at home, and listen to music for itself. Of course, it is done with emotions, but it is also done with another ingredient, a mysterious mixture of density, dynamics, harmony, duration, vibrations and resonance, and it is the sense of beauty. This very interior, and still externally expressed, sense of beauty that lets the composer create, or the jazzmen improvise, or the group to play together.

Sometime, when I listen to a jazz ballad for instance, they tell me : why do you always listen to sad music ?
And I always answer : I don't hear if it is sad or joyful. I just listen to its beauty.
